Start Here: About Don't Need Much Money

Don't Need Much Money is exactly what it sounds like: a site about needing less, so you have more. More time. More freedom. More room to actually live. The idea is simple. The less money you need to survive, the more time you have to thrive. Lower your living costs, live a healthy lifestyle focused on longevity and mobility, stay out of debt, and build a little savings, and you buy yourself something far more valuable than money: time. Time to do what you actually love, spend with people you care about, and put toward things that matter. This site is my own real life running that experiment. Most of what you'll find here are recipes and day-to-day habits. They aren't filler posts, it's intentional. Cooking from scratch, buying smart, wasting less, eating well, and staying healhty, fit, and limber all without spending much are some of the most direct ways I practice this philosophy day to day. This blog doubles as my own recipe box and exercise notes, and I share it b...

Best Aftershave Face Lotion

Sticking to the shaving theme from the last post, I want to share what I have found to be the best aftershave face lotion. It is Trader Joes Enrich Moisturizing Face Lotion. I have three critical things when it comes to aftershave:
  1. It needs to spread and absorb quickly leaving my skin feeling like skin while giving a soothing, non burning feeling.
  2. It needs SPF protection.
  3. It needs to be affordable so I don't feel guilty using it.
This product checks all those boxes. The lotion is the perfect consistency - thick enough to not run everywhere but thin enough to spread quickly on the skin. It also absorbs quickly leaving no white residue to the skin. And when you do your best Macaulay Culkin from Home Alone, it does not give a burning sensation after shaving. Instead it is quite soothing allowing me to apply my cologne afterwards without stinging my face. And my skin appears to be fine with it. I have yet to develop any rash or negative reaction to the lotion.

It also comes with SPF 15 protection, To me, this is just enough. Any higher SPF and it would probably ruin the face lotion making it feel more like a sunscreen. But SPF 15 is strong enough to provide just enough protection for mild outdoor exposure that happens during a routine day.

The cost is also just right at only $4.99 for 4 ounces. There are likely better after shave face lotions out there but not at this price. I'll use my In-N-Out analogy. It's not the best burger you've ever had, but it's the best $3 burger you've ever had. Same goes for this face lotion. It is the best $5 face lotion you'll find.

The product isn't perfect. There are two ways it could be better. First, the sunscreen ingredients include Octinoxate and Zinc Oxide. I love the Zinc Oxide but the Octinoxate is not a great ingredient. It is an artificial chemical that isn't gooe for the skin since it can absorb into the system and it is known to contribute to depleting coral reefs when it rubs off in ocean water.

Second, the inactive ingredients have quite a list of unnatural ingredients, but so do most other face lotions. Wearing a sunscreen face lotion is becoming more critical for me as my dermatologist has removed a couple questionable spots. Thankfully none of them have been melanoma but I need to take precautions. This face lotion allows me to do just that at a very affordable price. So if you haven't found a go-to aftershave face lotion yet, be sure to give this one a try.
